I hadn’t heard of Jocelyn Chia until she was making jokes about the missing Malaysia Airlines flight MH370. She appears to be a Singaporean stand-up comedian, but according to Vanu Gopala Menon, High Commissioner of the Republic of Singapore to Malaysia, she is no longer a Singaporean.

As a Malaysian, I find it quite common for both countries — Malaysia and Singapore — to roast and make fun of one another, and we don’t take offense. This is the first time I’ve seen many Malaysians offended by the jokes, and I, for one, don’t enjoy it and don’t think the jokes are humorous. She joked about MH370, a disappearing Malaysian plane carrying 12 Malaysian crew members and 227 passengers from 14 other nations.

If you have never watched the video, let me explain it to you.

Jocelyn asked an individual in the crowd whether they were from Singapore or Malaysia. When the person replied that they were from Malaysia, Jocelyn immediately said:

“Malaysia! Okay. A**holes, f**k you!”

This is okay. Comedians do this all the time.

Then she brought up Malaysia’s separation from Singapore in 1965. Jocelyn stated that Singapore’s prime minister went on television…
